Join Katy Galbraith of Recycle Me Mosaics in a two-day course learning the basics of making a mosaic picture or mirror in discarded ceramics.
9.30-4 both days
This workshop is ideal for beginners, improvers and curious crafters and offers a fun-filled weekend with step-by-step guidance in a small group.
Birds, fish, flowers are all possibilities, and can be colourful or monochrome, depending on your own style and the materials available
A selection of ceramics, tiles, nuggets, and glass will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own discarded ceramics for your project, giving it a more personal feel, more akin to a traditional patchwork quilt idea, where only you will know the provenance of the pieces. Tools and other materials are also provided. We will be working on wooden boards, so not suitable for outdoors.
DAY 1 Exploring the materials available, learning cutting and adhesion techniques, positioning of tesserae and creating a pleasing design and starting on your project(s)
DAY 2 In the morning, working on your project until all the space is filled, then grouting and cleaning up the mosaic in the afternoon
“Mucky clothes” and comfy shoes are recommended.
Tea and coffee will be provided throughout the day. LUNCH not provided so please bring a packed lunch

By the end of the workshop, you will have produced a collection of drawings, fabric samples and 1.5 meter length of printed/painted fabric for your own project or to display as a Textile banner.

Helens training began in 1999 at Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art and Design, Dundee, where she studied Constructed and Printed Textiles, specialising later in Surface Pattern. Growing up around an antiques furniture shop, her family home was filled with curiosities and collectables of all kinds. Her love of objects and artworks from past eras grew from this exposure and the interest and influence has never left her. As part of the OUTLANDER costume team, Helens designs were used on many of the principle costumes and even featured in the Golden Globes awards in 2018, a huge honour! Having spent a decade working in Theatre and Costume for film, she has utilised her story telling experience and now focuses this skillset within her own Artistic practice. She now creates site-specific Printed Textile Artworks, working with historic venues and locations, telling their stories through fabric.
Join artist Hannah Ayre, for a deep dive into this camera-free alternative photography technique. Developed by 19th century scientists, this technique was immediately adopted for creative purposes and it continues to inspire artists today. WORKSHOP TIMING: 9.30 - 4pm
You will learn about the history and chemistry of the process, before making your own experiments. It is a great opportunity to “play” whilst having expert guidance. As part of the day we will go for a short walk to collect plants for our work. You will work with paper and fabric which will be pre prepared by Hannah, using safe iron based solutions. You will also have the opportunity to coat your own papers and try out wet cyanotype technique. The process creates a blue and white print, we will also experiment with toning prints to change colour. At the end of the day you will take home a series of prints on paper and fabric and a set of cards. Note: we will have UV lamps incase the Scottish weather isn’t smiling on us. You will need a waterproof coat and “mucky clothes” that you don’t mind getting dirty, although we do provide an apron.
Tea and coffee will be provided throughout the day. LUNCH not provided so please bring a packed lunch or you can use the onsite cafe.
